The MINI rear brake system uses single-piston sliding calipers with an integrated handbrake mechanism on most models. The rear calipers are commonly replaced due to seized handbrake mechanisms — a result of the cable-operated parking brake corroding the internal screw threads inside the piston.
On the F56 and F60, the rear brakes switched to an electric parking brake (EPB) actuated by a dedicated motor on each rear caliper. EPB calipers require a specific reset procedure when replacing pads, and cannot be wound back by hand like conventional calipers. We identify EPB vs mechanical handbrake calipers clearly.
Each rear caliper is tested for handbrake mechanism operation, piston retraction, and sliding pin condition. Rotors are measured for minimum thickness and checked for scoring or heat-induced cracking.
