About This Engine

The B38 and B48 are BMW's modular TwinPower Turbo engine family — the B38 is a 3-cylinder 1.5L unit sharing its 500cc-per-cylinder architecture with the B48 2.0L 4-cylinder. Both engines feature twin-scroll turbocharging, direct injection, Valvetronic variable valve lift, and double-VANOS variable cam timing, giving excellent efficiency alongside strong performance.

The B38 in the F56 Cooper produces 136bhp — identical architecture to the engine used in the BMW i8 (in hybrid form). Despite being a 3-cylinder, BMW's balancer shaft and careful engine mount tuning make it one of the smoothest 3-cylinders in any production car. The B48 in the Cooper S produces 192bhp in standard form, with JCW producing 231bhp and the JCW GP3 extracting 306bhp from the same basic architecture.

These engines are sourced from low-mileage donor vehicles — typically 30,000–60,000km — with full service history. At these mileages, the B38/B48 family has essentially no known wear issues. Our units are compression tested and oil pressure checked before listing.
