2001–2006 · Classic Generation · Lebanon
The W10 and W11 engines are the first-generation MINI powertrains, developed through the BMW/Chrysler partnership (the Tritec engine family). The W10 is a naturally aspirated 1.6L four-cylinder producing 90bhp in the base Cooper One, 116bhp in the Cooper. The W11 adds the Eaton M45 Roots-type supercharger, taking output to 163bhp in the standard Cooper S and up to 210bhp in the JCW specification.
The W11 supercharger is belt-driven from the crankshaft and spins at approximately 2.4× engine speed — this gives the W11 its characteristic instant throttle response and linear power delivery without turbo lag. The supercharger requires correct belt tension and condition; we verify the supercharger belt and idler pulleys on all W11 units.
Common issues on the W10/W11 family include timing chain wear (particularly on higher-mileage units) and VANOS variable valve timing solenoid faults on the later W10. Each engine undergoes compression testing across all four cylinders, oil pressure check, and visual inspection for external leaks before listing.
