The N14 and N18 are the Prince engine family, a joint development between BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën. The N14 (2007–2010) was the first turbocharged MINI engine in the R56 generation, replacing the supercharged W11. The N18 (2011–2014) is a revised version addressing known N14 weaknesses — notably the timing chain tensioner and the oil pump drive.
The N14 suffered from a well-documented timing chain tensioner failure issue on early production units, caused by a plastic tensioner shoe that could fracture under cold starts. BMW issued a recall and revised the tensioner — engines we supply have the updated tensioner fitted and confirmed. The N18 redesigned the timing system entirely, with a dual-chain arrangement and revised oil pump driven by a separate chain.
Both N14 and N18 engines are supplied with the turbocharger fitted — removing the turbo separately and installing it onto a replacement long block is an unnecessary complication we eliminate by keeping the assembly together. The turbo is inspected for bearing play, shaft seal condition, and correct boost pressure on the outlet.
