The F60 cylinder head differs between the B48 and B38 engines — the B48 has a 16-valve four-cylinder head while the B38 uses a 12-valve three-cylinder head. Both feature Valvetronic variable valve lift actuators integrated into the head, adding complexity compared to earlier MINI engines.
Common reasons to replace an F60 cylinder head include head gasket failure from overheating, Valvetronic eccentric shaft failure (causing rough idle and power loss), and valve seat wear at very high mileage. The Valvetronic system is particularly sensitive to oil quality — heads from cars with poor service history may show eccentric shaft wear.
Each cylinder head is pressure tested for coolant and combustion leaks, the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and motor are verified for correct operation, and the camshaft bearing surfaces are inspected for wear before listing.
