The MINI R60 Cooper S uses the Getrag GS6-55BG 6-speed manual gearbox — the same proven unit found in the R56 Cooper S and Clubman. It is a robust, close-ratio 6-speed that handles the N18 engine's output confidently and is well-regarded by enthusiast drivers.
Common issues on high-mileage units include second-gear synchro wear (difficult engagement when cold), worn selector bushings causing vague gate feel, and leaking input shaft seals. All of these are inspectable before purchase — we test every gear individually and report synchro condition.
The GS6-55BG is also used in FWD ALL4 variants of the R60; the transfer case attaches to the gearbox output on ALL4 models, so ensure you confirm whether you need the FWD or ALL4 gearbox housing when ordering.
