The R60's N16 and N18 engines share a timing chain architecture similar to the R56's N14 unit but with significant improvements — the N18 in particular received an updated hydraulic tensioner design that eliminated the catastrophic early-stretch failures seen on many N14 engines. However, the N16 and N18 chains are still considered a maintenance item at high mileage.
Common symptoms of a worn timing chain on the R60 include a rattling noise on cold start (especially the first few seconds), rough idle after warm-up, or timing error fault codes (P0011, P0016, P0017). Ignoring these symptoms risks the chain jumping a tooth, which causes valve damage and potentially destroys the engine.
The kit includes the updated tensioner design, a new chain, and both upper and lower guides — all the components needed for a complete timing chain replacement without sourcing parts individually.
