The front strut top mount sits between the top of the MacPherson strut and the vehicle's inner wing. It serves two purposes: isolating road noise and vibration from the body, and providing a pivot bearing (thrust bearing) that allows the strut to rotate with the steering.
Worn strut top mounts are one of the most common causes of front-end knocking noise on MINI Coopers, particularly audible when turning the steering wheel at low speed or parking. The knocking comes from the failed rubber isolator or worn thrust bearing allowing metal-to-metal contact.
Each strut mount is inspected for rubber isolator condition (no tearing or collapse), thrust bearing play (should rotate smoothly with no roughness), and the top nut threading. We supply both sides as a matched pair.
