About This Transmission

The F56 Cooper uses an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic, while the Cooper S and JCW use the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic — one of the best automatic gearboxes in any BMW Group product. The ZF 8HP is used across BMW, Rolls-Royce, Maserati, and Jeep platforms due to its exceptional efficiency and shift speed.

The automatic transmission includes the mechatronic unit — the combined hydraulic and electronic control unit inside the gearbox that manages all shift programming and hydraulic pressure. Mechatronic failure is one of the main failure modes of the 8HP; we scan all mechatronic units for fault codes and verify hydraulic pressure before listing.

The torque converter is included with every automatic gearbox we supply — replacing the gearbox without the torque converter risks premature failure due to contaminated fluid mixing between the old converter and the new box. The converter is inspected for lock-up clutch slip and bearing condition.
