About This Transmission
The F56 manual gearbox is an updated Getrag 6-speed unit designed to match the B38 and B48 TwinPower Turbo engines. While sharing the GS6-55BG naming heritage with the R56 unit, the F56 gearbox has revised internal ratios and updated selector mechanism to suit the different torque characteristics of the modular BMW engines.
The B38 (3-cylinder) and B48 (4-cylinder) have different torque outputs, and the gearbox ratios are tuned accordingly — Cooper and Cooper S gearboxes are not directly interchangeable. The F56 Cooper S manual is the better choice for buyers seeking an engaging drive without the complexity of the automatic Steptronic.
As the F56 is a recent-generation vehicle, these gearboxes are sourced from relatively low-mileage donor cars. Synchromesh wear is minimal at these mileages, and our testing confirms smooth engagement across all ratios before listing.
