The R50 Cooper uses a Midland 5-speed manual gearbox — a design derived from the Rover/MG transmission architecture brought into the BMW-era MINI. It is a compact unit with a cable-operated gear selection linkage and produces a notchy but precise shift feel that many owners appreciate.
The R53 Cooper S uses the Getrag GS6-55BG 6-speed manual — a more robust unit designed to handle the higher torque output of the supercharged W11 engine. The Getrag box has shorter ratios in the lower gears and a taller 6th for cruising, making the R53 Cooper S notably more engaging to drive than the 5-speed Cooper.
Both gearboxes are inspected for synchromesh condition (gear engagement smoothness across all ratios), bearing noise at input and output shaft, and selector fork wear. We do not sell gearboxes with crunching 2nd or 3rd synchros — the most common failure on high-mileage R53 units.
