The Getrag GS6-55BG is the 6-speed manual gearbox used across the entire R56 range — Cooper (N12/N16), Cooper S (N14/N18), and JCW. While the gearbox casing is common, the internal gear ratios differ between Cooper and Cooper S specifications — the Cooper S has a shorter first gear ratio to handle the higher torque, and a taller top gear for motorway efficiency.
The cable-operated selector mechanism on the R56 provides a direct and precise shift feel. Common issues include worn selector cables (causing a vague or notchy shift) and 3rd gear synchromesh wear on high-mileage or hard-driven units.
